Derek Joseph

Derek is our 2nd boy.  He was also conceived with the help of the fertility drug, Clomid.  While help was needed with Logan due to birth control pills causing havok with my system, we did get pregnant without help (while nursing!), but after losing that baby at 10 weeks, my system was again a big mess.  Logan took 3 rounds, Derek only took 1!  I was shocked!

Derek was another VBAC.  My pregnancy was pretty uneventful.  At my 37 week appointment, my blood pressure was slightly high, but nothing too critical.  I was sent home and instructed to take it easy.  My OB then went out of town and at my 38 week appointment with the CNP, my blood pressure was high enough to warante a non-stress test (NST).  This showed that my blood pressure was fine if I was on my side.  So home to bed-rest I went.  2 days later I had a BP re-check and it was still very high.  So we did some blood work and I was sent to the hospital to be induced!

The induction was pretty quick, but the first 4 hours were not much, nothing I would even consider labor.  Things finally started happening around 6:00 and I was ready to push around 8:15 but had to wait for the doctor who was delivering another baby.  Derek was born after just ONE push at 9:01pm.  He was 7lbs 2oz, 18.5″ long, and had a 14″ head.  My smallest baby, but also was almost 2 weeks early.

Derek has been a healthy little boy so far.  He did have surgery to open up a lacrimal tear duct at about 11 months old, which worked well for a few days and then it started gooping up again.  Thankfully, after continuing to do the duct massages a few times a day, it has totally cleared up on its own.

My concerns with Derek and autism are minimal.  He is far beyond where Logan was at his age.  Interacts with people, points at things in books, says and signs words, and no sensory issues at all.  Physically he is way beyond Logan at this age, and honestly will probably catch up or pass him at some point soon.
